You can read my piece on t'above online. It was published in 'Things Happen' zine, which was launched as part of FutureEverything festival but which will continue independently. It's great. We like MMDC.

Really enjoyed reading this, and I'm glad new things are starting up to challenge the conventional conspicuous consumerism urged by the village. Kaffequeeria used to be good at that, but I think it's hit the wall now... I shall keep my ear to the ground, and pray fervently for a decent new club night where I don't have to dance to shit neo house and pretend I love it.
ReplyDeleteNice article David. Very interesting. As an American, there are things that I have learned upon reading which I am subsequently wondering about. My first thought is I think it's great how you challenge what you call neo-liberal capitalism. It seems to me that in America you would be hard-pressed to find something that so explicitly slates capitalism. Maybe it's because I don't live in or around a large, dynamic urban space, I don't know. But it feels like you are making a lot of assumptions that your audience(?) understands and that I do not. By and large, I would hypothesize that capitalism is assumed...it's almost impossible to imagine an alternative.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, I'm not sure how your issue question (what next for the gay village) can be a significant question if the system remains capitalist and if its people, on the whole, buy into it (no pun intended). If it's all about stuff and things and more stuff, how can we expect people do change how businesses are run?
